Time for some "carbon" - recently we had a carbon bracket fail. The "sheave" was mounted in a carbon U-shape bracket with a stainless steel pin. The alignment of the rope was "crooked" and the whole assembly failed. When you have nobody on hand to make you a new bracket - best option: dust it yourself...
3D Printing · 11. February 2018
A new project for some engineering & 3D printing. The project consisted in finding a way to install a "string pot" sensor on a round tube. Please enjoy the result, that is strong, lightweight and adjustable.

clips for water pipes
It's time to install some pipes and hoses on board. One part of the refit consist of a new proper plumbing installation. The new fresh water pipes come with little clips to install them - which looks very neat. Unfortunately we have not found any glue that is easy to handle and keeps them in place. Electricity on board a yacht is always a delicate topic as in our case weight, waterproof/splash-proof equipment is not always standard of the shelf available. Also the salty air can become over time an issue for certain equipment. To save weight and cable length it is preferable to have the controllers, breakers etc. mounted close by. As often standard solutions don't fit our requirements, we just made them ourselves, lots of DYI...

Cork & Linen infused
Composites, in our case mostly carbon & fiberglass with epoxy resin, are all around us (on board the performance sailing yacht) but this time we went onto unknown grounds - Bio-composites. Our friend Erwan got us "hooked" up and there was no way around, we had to try it ourself. The idea of using natural fibers for a composite structure was just too appealing for DIY and we love the result.

An other DIY project - this time it involved some sanding (dust) & painting. Our rudder blades needed some repair after five years of loyal service. Some parts of the outer skins got stripped and new layers of laminate added, we than took over for the painting and antifouling. It's time to make them look pretty again...

A small composite DIY project that consist in making a cover for the tracker installed on board. The tracker itself doesn't mind to be outside but it fades with the UV of the sun and can't be painted. To keep it look nice over time - we have decided to make a snug fitting fiberglass cover to protect it.

Cutting stock for Ceiling panel catches
The boatyard decided to mount our ceiling panels with a system of tubes and clips, but in tight places they have difficulties to fit their components. Therefore they found a smart idea on how to do this and they asked us for some help cutting the frames with the CNC. This is now time to make a lot of Dust!!!!
