Custom Boat Project - Ceiling panel catch

Cutting stock for Ceiling panel catches
Cutting stock for Ceiling panel catches

During our actual refit in France, the boatyard decided to mount our new ceiling panels with a system of tubes and clips. But in some areas, the space is too tight so they have difficulties to fit their components. Therefore they came up with a smart idea on how to do this. They have asked us for help cutting the custom parts with our Stepcraft CNC. It's great to be able to help with this project and this will save some time and effort.

We primarily went through a prototyping process in order to have the right geometry and the parts work with the correct tension in the clip. Now that we are happy with the results of the protos, it is time to start production.

First step is to prepare the raw material and cut out the stocks, in our case G10 - see picture above.

Then we cut out the shapes with the CNC router. But cutting G10 either with the saw or the CNC is pretty nasty. Even with the fitted dust extraction on the equipments, fine dust is filling the air of our workshop / garage. This fine fiberglass dust is going all over and it is really awful to breath in and unhealthy. We wear specific dust masks with filters to protect our lungs. To help keeping the air clean around the workspace I am thinking to purchase and install a recycling air box. This is a big investment but if it works as described in the brochure it would be worthwhile. We will do some more research first around us and online to find out about the pertinence of such an equipment.

CNC cutting
CNC cutting. OUPS!!! There is an error in the reference I will have to redo one of them.

JOB DONE!!!

Final result, I hope the boat-yard will be happy.
