Custom Boat Project - Bright Orange Rudders

Orange rudder blade after primer & layer of white antifouling

An other DIY project - this time it involved some sanding (dust) & painting. Our rudder blades needed some repair after five years of loyal service. Some parts of the outer skins got stripped and new layers of laminate added, we than took over for the painting and antifouling. It's time to make them look pretty again...

After the repair and sanding, lots of sanding to fit inside the rudder bearings, we have started with couples of layers of epoxy primer to have a waterproof rudder. We want to avoid any possibilities for water-ingress in our carbon/sandwich rudders.

As the top of the rudders will be visible when it's in the rudder bearing assemble and it's not under water, we have decided to reuse a top coat paint for the black part.

Black topcoat on rudder head, the rest of the rudder is covered with grey epoxy primer.

After the epoxy primer with lots of sanding between coats, we first applied two coats for white antifouling as recommended by the paint manufacturer. Once the white antifouling is dried and smooth, we applied the bright orange antifouling.

First coat of bright orange antifouling applied - we applied two coats to have a nice finish

Finished painted rudder blades
Finished result - ready to get installed back on board (once the rest of the project is finished as well)

We like the result - very race boat style ;-)
