Custom Boat Project - Tracker cover

Tracker
The tracker needs a cover as it can't be painted

A small composite DIY project that consist in making a cover for the tracker installed on board. The tracker itself doesn't mind to be outside but it fades with the UV of the sun and can't be painted. To keep it look nice over time - we have decided to make a snug fitting fiberglass cover to protect it.

We started with a male mould out of foam to cover it with layers of fiberglass. To have a perfect finish and to do have a good paint job, we applied some filler which we than rectified with our Stepcraft cnc router in three dimensions.

Please check out the pictures that show the different steps. We have chosen fiberglass as carbon may block the GPS signal.

Interior surface of the cover
With the female mould, the interior has a very smooth surface.

Thin skins of fiberglass to make sure the GPS can pass through

After the composite work, we applied a primer and a glossy top coat paint.

We are happy about the result. We did two parts and due to the cnc work with have two identical pieces. Our tracker will be nicely protected from the UV of the sun and fit perfectly in the decor of the rest of the boat.
